4 Ways to Use Mindfulness In Your Job Search

In these challenging times,  we at Shaw Search Partners want to encourage you to not give up on your job search. As experts in recruiting, we see new job opportunities becoming available daily. While COVID-19 has changed our day to day life, it truly hasn’t shut everything down. There are still career pivots to be had and dream jobs to be found. Many of us are using mindfulness to navigate these times. Mindfulness can also help you to find your next position. Here are four ways how.

1. Stay present

One of the most difficult challenges when on the cusp of a transition is the flood of thoughts that can occur at the uncertainty of what the future holds. Meditation is the moment to moment awareness without judgment of your thoughts. Observe your thoughts and question any self limiting beliefs within them. This post Coronavirus world can inspire a lot of fearful thoughts. Take a moment to step away from your thoughts and discard the ones that aren’t serving you.

2. Do one thing at a time

In a culture that prioritizes multitasking and productivity, it’s easy to get caught up in a cycle of doing too many things at once. Make an effort to do one thing at a time in order to feel less frenzied and stressed. Multitasking can help us to feel like we’re getting a lot done. Feeling busy can give us a false sense of accomplishment but studies show that the reverse is true; when we multitask we tend to be less efficient. When we focus on one thing at a time, we are more creative and ultimately, more effective at producing the results we’re striving for.

3. Set aside your digital technology

We’ve all heard the advice of turning off our phone an hour before we go to bed. For some, that is a reality and for others it feels like an impossibility. Be aware of how often you’re on your phone or your computer. Strive to take at least 10 minutes within the day to either turn off your phone or put your phone in another room. Begin there. Once you get used to the effort of taking a break from having technology at your fingertips, it will eventually become easier to set it aside. It can be really easy to get lost in a technological device but staying present and being mindful, will ultimately get you faster to where you want to be in your job search.

4. Breathe deeply

Take deep breaths. Job hunting is challenging and it’s perfectly normal to become overwhelmed. Remind yourself within the process to breathe. Mindful breathing is like putting gas in your tank and filling up your reserves for ultimately being a more relaxed and more present person. Doing so will help increase calm and clarity to attain your ultimate goal.

At Shaw Search Partners, even amidst COVID-19, we are still seeing folks find jobs they love. Trust the process. Use mindfulness as a means to approach the job search feeling more calm and confident. Mindfulness improves your ability to focus and with so many things distracting us and pulling our attention away, mindfulness will help you to focus on exactly what you want.
