How to Prepare for a Remote Interview

With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and many nationwide companies opting to keep their offices remote throughout the new year, virtual interviews are becoming more and more commonplace for those on the market for a new job. As our expert recruiters know, remote interviews present unique challenges for candidates as the rules of traditional interviewing don’t necessarily apply to their virtual counterparts.

If you’re nervous about an upcoming remote interview or seeking guidance from experienced recruiters on how to ace any job interview, Shaw Search Partners is here to help. Read on to learn our tried and tested tips for preparing for an upcoming remote interview.

1. Test Your Set-Up

Technical difficulties can be challenging to avoid at times. However, you can test out the video conferencing platform ( such as Zoom or Google Meet)  in preparation for the interview. Check your systems requirements, update the program if needed, and double-check your audio and video settings. By testing out the necessary technology needed to join the interview beforehand, you can avoid unnecessary glitches once the big day arrives.

2. Find the Right Backdrop

To maintain professionalism, it is important to opt for a space within your home that limits distractions. Scope out your home to find a space that is neutral, quiet, and comfortable. Be sure to test out lighting options as well! Shaw Search Partner Tip: If you do not want your interviewer to see your home, consider a professional virtual background. Options are available via many teleconferencing programs.

3. Limit Distractions

On the day of your interview, remember to communicate to your family or roommates when you will be interviewing to limit distractions and interruptions. If possible, arrange childcare for the duration of your interview and prepare a long-lasting distraction for your four-legged friends. Nothing is more distracting than a dog barking at a delivery driver!

4. Do Your Research

Similar to traditional, in-person interviews, researching the prospective company and reviewing the job description and requirements are critical before your scheduled remote interview. Understand the mission, target audience, and services of the company and prepare questions on the work environment, day-to-day responsibilities, internal processes, or performance expectations. Your interviewer will recognize your familiarity with the company and your eagerness to learn more about the daily operations of their teams.

5. Dress Professionally

If you are familiar with working from home, you understand the added benefit of being able to work in your sweatpants or pajamas! However, it’s important to remember to dress professionally for an upcoming remote interview. Just as with an in-person interview, a first impression can make or break your success as a potential candidate. Whether it’s an entry-level position or a high-level leadership role, dressing professionally communicates to your interviewer that you take the company and position seriously.

6. Pay Attention to Body Language

Our team at Shaw Search Partners understands - video calls can be awkward at times. It is important to remember that the rules of body language still apply via computer screens. Maintain eye contact, stay focused, and remain engaged. Shaw Search Partner Tip: Act natural! If you typically use hand gestures, feel comfortable doing so during a virtual interview. As with any interview, corporate recruiters and interviewers are looking to gauge if your personality is the right fit for their company. Be yourself!

7. Don’t Forget to Send a Thank You

While many job seekers may believe this critical step in the interview process to be superfluous, a post-interview thank-you note can go a long way. A thank you email following the interview can express your gratitude for your interviewer's time and reiterate your interest in the position and company. A little bit of gratitude can go a long way.

No matter what form your next job interview may come in, the importance of preparedness remains. As with any interview, do your research on the company and familiarize yourself with the job description and responsibilities. Take a deep breath - we know you’ll do a great job!
