Keeping It Together During The Coronavirus

These times are unprecedented. As experts in RI Corporate recruiting and MA corporate recruiting, we are seeing the effect Coronavirus is having on people’s careers and let’s be honest…lives. We don’t claim to know everything  on how to navigate this incredibly trying time. We do, however, have a few ideas on how to best cope in today’s challenging world. Here are six ways to keep it together during the Coronavirus outbreak.

Self-care
We’ve all heard the expression, “You can’t pour from an empty cup.” Now more than ever, even as hard as it is, make time for yourself. Whether it’s reading a book, a walk by yourself, or just taking a minute to breathe, create space for self-care. In times of crisis, it’s so easy to hop on the hamster wheel. Resist the urge to put yourself last. Schedule time for yourself even if it involves setting your alarm and getting up an hour early. “When we take care of ourselves, we’re better able to care for others and show up for them as the best version of ourselves—not burnt-out, exhausted and resentful people,..Our loved ones deserve better than that.” If you are stressed, frazzled and upset, everything feels so much harder. Self-care is your ticket out of that.

Create routines
In the short term it can feel nice to stay in your pajamas. Creating a routine can help to create the consistency needed during a time when everything feels out of control. Wake up and go to bed around the same times you would when things were more “normal.” Resist the urge to watch tv late into the night because, well, you can.

Take a news break
While it’s important to have a general idea of what is happening, staying “tuned in” all the time can increase stress and anxiety. Constantly being connected can invoke a real sense of panic and fear. Try checking the news from reliable sources once or twice a day.

Get fresh air
Never underestimate the power of a walk outside. Ride your bike, go for a run and get some fresh air. This is a stressful situation for everybody. Getting outside and changing your environment, is a great way to reduce some of that stress.

Meditate
Insert a moment of calm into your day with meditation. Even if you’re just taking five to ten minutes, meditation can be transformative. Apps like Calm and Insight Timer can help with guided meditations and are completely free. Meditation can help you to relax at a deeper level, increase your focus and enhance your overall well-being. Meditation can really improve your mental health and that is definitely helpful during a world pandemic.

Sleep
Research shows that well-rested people are better at fending off viruses. Aim to get about 7-9 hours of sleep each night. Experts recommend sleeping in a completely dark room and limiting any screen time at least an hour before turning in.

Prioritize your wellness as best you can during a time when most of us have heightened anxiety and stress. Prepare and plan to the best of your ability and then let the rest go. We are all in this together and we’ll get through it.
